EU Launches Probe Into X Over Digital Services Act Compliance

The European Union has stepped up its oversight of major technology platforms, announcing a formal investigation into X (formerly Twitter) to assess whether it is complying with the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

EU Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen said the probe would “determine whether X has met its legal obligations” under the DSA, a landmark regulation designed to hold large internet companies accountable for how they manage online content and user safety.

The Digital Services Act sets strict rules for major digital platforms operating within the European Union. These include requirements for transparent content moderation, effective measures to limit the spread of illegal material and misinformation, and clearer reporting obligations to regulators.

The investigation comes amid ongoing concerns in Brussels about changes to X’s content moderation policies following its acquisition by Elon Musk. EU officials have repeatedly warned that platforms failing to meet DSA standards could face significant penalties, including heavy fines.

According to EU authorities, the probe is part of a broader effort to ensure that online platforms respect European laws and maintain a safer, more accountable digital environment for users across the bloc.
